Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research and The Doctoral Programme in Science at University of Helsinki, the Nordic Graduate School 'Biosphere-Carbon-Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions' (CBACCI), Nordic Master's Degree Programme 'Atmosphere-Biosphere-Studies' (ABS), iLEAPS, The Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center (ACCC), and PEEX are pleased to invite students to the 2026 Summer School "Formation and growth of atmospheric aerosols" (course ATMDP-005).

The course is worth 5 credits of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

The course is aimed to PhD students and advanced MSc students in atmospheric sciences. Topics that will be covered include at least the following:

1. Atmospheric aerosols
2. Atmospheric observations of aerosol formation and growth
3. Aerosol particle formation mechanisms
4. Thermodynamics of aerosol formation
5. Aerosol dynamics: condensation, coagulation, deposition, general dynamic equation
6. Aerosols, clouds and climate
7. Large-scale modeling of atmospheric aerosol
8. Gaseous precursors of atmospheric aerosols and their chemistry
9. Laboratory investigations of nucleation and nanoparticle growth
10. Computational methods related to particle formation
11. Instrumentation to detect particles
12. Analysis of new particle formation events
13. Secondary aerosols and air quality
14. SOA & aerosol mass spectrometry

The course consists of lectures and exercises (group work). Seprate sessions related to transferable skills will also be included. There will be an exam at the end of the course. The course includes a visit to the SMEAR II station. There will also be recreational events such as barbeque, sauna and swimming.

Participation costs:

The course fee is 2100 €. It covers bus transport from Helsinki to Hyytiälä and back, accommodation in two-person rooms, all meals (breakfast, lunch, afternoon coffee, dinner, evening snack) in Hyytiälä, course material, and all academic and social programme during the course. The course fee does not cover any travel expenses related to arriving to Finland. University of Helsinki does not provide financial support for the course fee or travel expenses.

For students of University of Helsinki, this fee is covered by the university. Students from other Finnish and Nordic universities will only pay for accommodation and meals during the course, totalling about 1000 €. Students from other universities will additionally pay a course fee (900 €, VAT 0%), all costs totalling about 2100 €. The course fee should preferably be paid using a credit card (Visa, MasterCard), mobile payments (MobilePay, Siirto), or through an online bank transfer (Finnish banks) before the course starts.

We´re pleased to invite you to the 2nd OGTAC-CC community meeting that will be held online on April 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. CEST.

This is the second virtual community meeting within the framework of ACTRIS for all interested in QA/QC of particulate organic tracers (OTs). We invite you to a lively workshop where OGTAC-CC is presenting its current implementation status, latest news and future activities of the calibration centre.

On the one hand, this invitation is addressed to those NFs that officially indicated their interest in OT measurements from filters. On the other hand, we would like to invite in particular potential future NFs to inform about the current status and next steps connected to OGTAC-CC. NFs that indicated for example offline OC/EC measurements from filters are highly welcome to join this community meeting and to discuss potential interests, opportunities of OT measurements and applications.

We would be very glad for everybody to participate who could imagine that the activities of OGTAC-CC might be of any assistance for future ACTRIS work.

ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure, www.actris.eu) is a European research infrastructure for quality-assured observation of aerosols, clouds, and short-lived trace gases. ACTRIS serves to investigate the complex interactions between gases, aerosols and clouds, especially in the areas of climate and air quality.

We are looking for an outstanding personality in the field of aerosol research with in-depth experience in measurement technology and quality assurance for the Department of Atmospheric Microphysics (AMP).

In addition to research activities, the position encompasses the lead of CAIS-ECAC. It is important to maintain close contact with all institutions within CAIS-ECAC and to work together to shape the future of ACTRIS and CAIS-ECAC. Fundamentals & Methods for Aerosol Sampling and Physical & Chemical

In-Situ Measurements

Course contents & learning outcomes:

The lecture course provides fundamental knowledge in aerosol sampling & conditioning as well as methods for in-situ measurements of physical and chemical aerosol variables, covering all ACTRIS aerosol in-situ variables. Furthermore, a visit of the National Atmospheric Observatory Kosetice and hands-on training for few aerosol instruments are part of the course.

The course will be held face-to-face at the National Atmospheric Observatory Kosetice in Czech Republic. Interactive lectures will be given Sunday to Thursday from 8.00 to 17.00. After dinner, there will be time to meet for leisure activities or discuss with the lecturers.

All participants will obtain a certificate for their participation.

Target group:

The course is intended to people related to the ACTRIS aerosol in-situ measurements at the National Facilities. This could be technicians, advanced master students, doctoral students, as well as scientists. However, the course is also open to people related to CARGO-ACT, MI-TRAP, GAW, and other external (non-ACTRIS) users.

Lectures are given in English. Good communication skills in English are required.

Due to the limited accommodation in Kosetice, only 16 participants can be accepted.

Lecturers:

The course is coordinated by CAIS-ECAC. Lectures are given by top-level experts from the ACTRIS central facility for aerosol in-situ measurements.

Course fee, accommodation, meals & travel:

Theory and practice – Offline chromatographic (LC-MS and GC-MS) determination of organic tracer compounds and organic and elemental carbon (OC/EC) measurements in particulate matter collected on filters

OGTAC-CC offers a hands-on training course at TROPOS ACD, with the following elements:

• Introduction and presentation of sample collectors, preparation devices and analytical instrumentation
• Dedicated hands-on training at state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation (LC-MS, GC-MS and OC/EC) including filter extraction, analysis and quantification of organic marker compounds
• Demonstration of sample collection during an experimental run at the atmospheric simulation chamber ACD-C and during a visit of the TROPOS field station in Melpitz
• Lectures in atmospheric particle related chemical analysis

The course will be held for 5 days from Monday 24th to Friday 28th of November 2025 at TROPOS ACD in Leipzig. The number of participants is limited to 8.

Introduction:

This report pictures the methodology established to produce equivalent black carbon mass

concentration (eBC) in near real-time (NRT) from absorption coefficients measured by online

monitors, such as the Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP) or the various Aethalometer

models (e.g., AE33) installed at fixed observatory platforms. These instruments are referred here as

Filter Absorption Photometers (FAPs).

As previously defined in the frame of pre-ACTRIS research studies (Petzold et al., 2013): when using

FAPs, “equivalent black carbon (eBC) should be used instead of black carbon for data derived from

optical absorption methods, together with a suitable MAC [i.e., Mass Absorption Efficiency, in m²/g]

for the conversion of light absorption coefficient into mass concentration”.

The process followed within CAMS2.21a to determine such a suitable MAC value at the European

scale has been described in milestone M21a.1.1.1 (2023). It notably resulted from the collaborative

work of an ad hoc working group of European experts, before discussion was enlarged as also part of

WP1 activities of the HE RI-URBANS project, considering synergies between this ACTRIS-related

program (proposing and testing services for urban air quality) and CAMS2.21a. This whole process

was also conducted in collaboration with the current activities of the European standardization body

for ambient air quality on the establishment of equivalent methods for the measurement of

elemental carbon deposited on filters (CEN/TC 264 working group 35, chaired by JP Putaud).

Dear ACTRIS partners,

Particulate Matter (PM) is considered as one of the most harmful air pollutant in outdoor air for human health. Although PM mass concentrations (PM10 and PM2.5) are not ACTRIS variables, they can be useful in data QC processes like e.g. mass closure exercises.

In January – February 2025, the European Reference Laboratory for Air Pollution of the EC – Joint Research Centre will organise its 4th Proficiency Testing Scheme (PTS) for PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentration measurements. Practically, the results obtained by the participants during a 6-week field campaign in Ispra (IT) will be statistically evaluated according to relevant ISO guides. Participants shall primarily use the reference method described in the European standard EN 12341. However, on-line instruments will be accommodated as much as possible.

Participation in this PTS is free of charge for public Research Performing Organisations. Transport and accommodation will be at your own cost and no certificate will be issued.

20/11/2024 afternoon: ACMCC technical workshop

ECAC/ACMCC is proposing an on-site technical workshop on 20/11/2024 afternoon dedicated to ACSM QA/QC, including hands-on trainings and SOP revisions.

This will be held at LSCE/ACMCC (collocated with the SIRTA facility: https://acmcc.aeris-data.fr/access/), in conjunction with the 2024 intercomparison exercise.

While on-site venue is preferred, especially for hand-on training, remote SOP discussions will be possible.

21/11/2024 morning: ECAC community - manufacturer meeting (online PM chemistry)

Taking advantage of receiving this year new instrumentations, we would like to have a dedicated time for manufacturers to present their (innovative) solutions for the online measurements of PM chemical composition. We will notably have this year Aerodyne, Ionicon and Aerospec. You will be able to exchange with them (comments, questions), and people on-site shall also have the possibility to see directly some of those instruments at the ACMCC lab.

INTRODUCTION

Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) are key components of PM2.5, the fine fraction of the air-suspended particulate matter. Their measurement is required by the European Air Quality Directive (2008/50/EC). OC and EC concentrations are also part of the core variables listed by the co-operative programme for monitoring and evaluation of the long-range transmission of air pollutants in Europe (EMEP) and the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds, Trace Gases Research Infra-Structure).

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission has been supporting the quality of total carbon (TC = OC + EC), OC and EC measurement data across Europe for almost 2 decades. In particular, it has been organising, running, analysing, and reporting about yearly inter-laboratory comparisons for the measurement of TC, OC and EC in PM2.5 samples deposited on filters for more than 15 years. These ILCs involved the scientific community, members of international and national monitoring networks, National Reference Laboratories, and instrument manufacturers.

This document describes the proficiency testing scheme for the measurement of TC, OC and EC in PM2.5 deposited on quartz fibre filters, as performed by the European Reference Laboratory for Air Pollution (ERLAP) of the JRC according to the requirements of the ISO/IEC 17043:2023 standard.

Theory and practice - LC-MS analysis of organic tracer compounds and determination of organic and elemental carbon (OC/EC) from particulate matter collected on filters

OGTAC-CC offers a hands-on training course at TROPOS ACD, with the following elements:

Introduction and presentation of sample collectors, preparation devices and analytical instrumentation
Dedicated hands-on training at state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation (LC-MS and OC/EC) including filter extraction, analysis and quantification of organic tracer compounds

Fundamentals & Methods for Aerosol Sampling and Physical & Chemical In-Situ Measurements

Course contents & learning outcomes:

The course will be held face-to-face at the National Atmospheric Observatory Kosetice in Czech Republic. Interactive lectures will be given Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 17.00. After dinner, there will be time to meet for leisure activities or for discussions with the lecturers. All participants will obtain a certificate for their participation.

Target group:

The course is mainly intended to people related to the ACTRIS aerosol in-situ measurements at the National Facilities. This could be advanced master students, doctoral students, early-career scientists as well as technicians. However, the course is also open to external (non-ACTRIS) users. Good communication skills in English are required.

Please notice, the accommodation at Kosetice is limited, therefore only 15 participants will be accepted.

Lecturers:

The course is coordinated by CAIS-ECAC. Lectures are given by top-level experts from the ACTRIS central facility for aerosol in-situ measurements. More information and the final detailed program will be made available at the CAIS-ECAC website.

Course fee, accommodation, meals & travel:

The course fee is 400€ per participant, including accommodation in two-bed rooms, all meals, and the transportation from and to Prague on Sunday April 16 and Saturday April 22, respectively.

WCCAP is working for the BLUE ANGEL – the German ecolabel

The Blue Angel has been the ecolabel of the German federal government for more than 40 years. It is awarded to environmentally friendly products and services. No other label in the non-food sector covers such a wide range of products and services.

The aim of the environmental label is to provide private customers, large institutional consumers and public institutions with reliable guidance for environmentally conscious purchasing. If there is a specific demand for environmentally friendly products, it promotes ecological product innovations and reduces the burden on the environment. The Blue Angel stands for independent, transparent and ambitious labelling.

Since recently, the BLUE ANGEL is available for stoves. The aim of the ecolabel in this sector is to encourage innovation and promote new developments in the design of stoves for the improvement of air quality.

To be certified with the Blue Angel, the stoves are subjected to an expanded test process that reflects the real emissions from burning wood. On this basis, stricter limits for pollutant emissions including the mass of the particulate matter have been defined. Furthermore, the Blue Angel for stoves calls, for the first time, for the introduction of a particle count limit for wood-burning stoves in order to protect human health.

Several test centers are already equipped with the appropriate devices for testing the criteria (primarily the number of particles), but there are no comparative measurements between the individual centers in order to obtain an overview of the scatter of the results under comparable conditions yet. This is where the WCCAP comes in. Within a round robin test, the instruments of the test centers come to the WCCAP to determine their performance, to check them against each other and to bring them to the same measurement level. In a next step, these quality assured instruments were used to determine the particulate matter emissions simultaneously at the same exhaust stack. The results of these tests are then used to validate the new method.

LABEC, the INFN accelerator laboratory hosting the EMC2 unit, is participating in a European research infrastructure of ion beam facilities, RADIATE (https://www.ionbeamcenters.eu/), that currently offers transnational access (TA) to the external-beam PIXE-PIGE facility for atmospheric aerosol sample analysis to external users.

Member of ACTRIS can benefit of this opportunity for high-sensitivity and high-throughput elemental analysis of atmospheric aerosols collected on daily, hourly and size-segregated (e.g. impactor) samples, using Ion Beam Analysis techniques, typically PIXE and PIGE with 3 MeV proton beams and exploiting a dedicated detection set-up made by an array of Silicon Drift Detectors for X-ray spectroscopy. Given the pandemic situation hands-off experiments are welcomed: the user sends the aerosol samples, we will analyse them and then we will send them back.

The users have to submit a proposal to RADIATE’s proposal submission system, RADIATE GATE (https:// gate.hzdr.de/user/). Check this presentation as a guideline.

Access is granted free of charge to positively evaluated proposals. Download the proposal template to prepare your proposal.

Information on how to submit a measurement proposal to RADIATE TA can be found at the following website:

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that the first call for proposals to access ATMO-ACCESS facilities is now open! ATMO-ACCESS will offer opportunities for free-of-charge Trans-National Access (TNA) to specific services at 43 operational European atmospheric research facilities in Europe.

In this first call, all ATMO-ACCESS facilities will be eligible, the call topic will be open and access modalities will be unrestricted.

Nevertheless, a key goal of the ATMO-ACCESS project is to explore and test modalities of access to eventually identify an optimum sustainable access model. Whilst not essential, in the spirit of ATMO-ACCESS, and in preparation for future calls, innovative modes of access are particularly encouraged. Examples of such novel access proposals could include, but are not limited to:

combinations of remote and physical access
combinations of training and scientific delivery / innovation
cross-disciplinary access from beyond atmospheric science
simultaneous or sequential access to multiple facilities
simultaneous access by users from multiple sectors
piloting of use of facilities for novel purposes
ATMO platforms offering access for the first time

Owing to continued and varied restrictions in response to COVID-19 measures it is understood that there may still be constraints on physical mobility; it may be advisable to consider remote or hybrid access contingencies where appropriate.

1. Some important rules due the COVID-19 situation

Please show the result of a quick test, not older than 24h, at your arrival on 25^th May.

On Wednesday and Friday, you will get tests from WCCAP/TROPOS. Please use them before the workshop. Please use an FFP2 mask during the whole workshop. Due to the situation (COVID-19) and the usage of our interim laboratory there is limited space. So only one person per institute/company is allowed to take part in the workshop.

2. For any questions and remarks regarding your instruments, please contact the corresponding workshop head, Kay Weinhold: weinhold@tropos.de

3. Shipping of Instruments to TROPOS

The instruments have to be at TROPOS until 25.Mai 2021, 9 am.

Dear friends from the aerosol in-situ community,

Here come a few announcements on the behalf of ECAC and the DC In Situ:

1. We are sorry about the confusion. However, due to organizational reasons, we have to postpone the aerosol in-situ community workshop for data QC and data submission, which was previously scheduled for May 4, 2021.

2. The new workshop date is Wednesday May 19 from 09.00 – 12.00 CEST. You will receive a separate Outlook invitation for this meeting, including the detailed agenda. The short agenda will be discussions about:

a) microphysical measurements (CPC, MPSS, CCNC)

b) optical measurements (AP, int. Nephelometer)

c) chemical measurements (OC/EC, ACSM)

d) other technical questions.

3. The ACTRIS In Situ Data Centre unit will offer an intensive support period for your questions around data reporting. Between 17 – 21 May 2021, we will have increased focus on responding to your questions (via ebas@nilu.no) as fast as possible.

4. Our DC In Situ colleagues Ann Mari and Yong will give lectures on the data reporting process at the Hyytiälä winter school next week. The lectures will be turned into videos. These videos will be made available as educational material for your help (by separate mail once available).

5. We plan monthly aerosol in-situ community workshops from now on (2 hours). The meeting on May 19 will the first one of the coming up series.

6. All meetings will be announced in future on the official ACTRIS and the ECAC websites

7. The topic of the next follow-up aerosol in-situ community workshops will be about the revised version of the “preliminary recommendations”, which will be released latest in June 2021.

8. ECAC und the DC created a new email list of the ACTRIS aerosol in-situ community hosted by the data center (this email was sent by this email list)

9. We are sure that this email list in not complete yet, since we don’t know all interested people, especially from the new coming up National Facilities. Opportunity to access EMC2 services through RADIATE Transnational Access (TA)

Given the pandemic situation hands-off experiments are welcomed: the user sends the aerosol samples, we will analyse them and then we will send them back.

Access is granted free of charge to positively evaluated proposals. Download the proposal template to prepare your proposal.
